"Anonymity has long been hailed as one of the founding philosophies of the Internet, a critical bulwark protecting our privacy. But that view no longer holds. In all but the most extreme scenarios—everywhere outside of repressive governments—anonymity damages online communities. Letting people remain anonymous while engaging in fundamentally public behavior encourages them to behave badly. Indeed, we shouldn’t stop at comments. Web sites should move toward requiring people to reveal their real names when engaging in all online behavior that’s understood to be public—when you’re posting a restaurant review or when you’re voting up a story on Reddit, say. In almost all cases, the Web would be much better off if everyone told the world who they really are."

Hi Mr. Brady,
I think that anonymous comments are useful in some situations and are inappropriate for others. For example, Anonymous is good to use when people do not want their real names out on the web.
Yet, I also do agree with this article when it states that it can cause people to post things in a different manner than they would if the person's name was visible, such as hurtful or negitive comments.
Thanks for the article!
I agree. Cowards are anonymous. Also it's real hard to cite anonymous people. It's not humble, it's annoying
I agree completely. People are just scared that there will be real-world consequences to their Internet actions.
I agree. I see this all over, on Xbox, and online. Anonymity encourages and allows people to be jerks and such online without worrying or caring about repercussions, which results in very bad, damaging comments. (and yeah, thats totally why i'm anonymous :p
Two anonymous posts on a post about anonymity....Oh the irony!
To be honest, I am torn as to how I feel about this.
On the one hand I agree with the general premise that if we are made to "own" our comments then we will tend to be more civil.
On the other hand, I personally do a lot of contract writing online that I prefer to do under pen names. There is a long standing tradition of using an alias when writing to allow for greater freedom when expressing opinions. And this goes back to some of our Founding Fathers.
i think anomity can be good when stateing the opionon of a restruant or book becuase it lets u know u can go agianst the majority of poeple with out being scrutinized in real life. poeples comments about poeple should be followed by the persons name that way they arent motivized to say harsh and untruthfull things about that person.
