Last CMC Online Discussion Question

This isn't due until next Mon night, 8PM:

First a quote, "Edmond Dantès takes justice into his own hands because he is dismayed by the limitations of society’s criminal justice system. Societal justice has allowed his enemies to slip through the cracks, going unpunished for the heinous crimes they have committed against him. Moreover, even if his enemies’ crimes were uncovered, Dantès does not believe that their punishment would be true justice. Though his enemies have caused him years of emotional anguish, the most that they themselves would be forced to suffer would be a few seconds of pain, followed by death."

Now the question: Is true justice possible? Can it be delivered by government/society? Can it be delivered by individuals? Religion? (God/ Karma/Fate). Can you think of examples where justice is simply not possible?

CMC HW for Friday's Discussion

Chose two questions below and write up some notes for tomorrow's discussion. Use quotes and specific examples when possible. Shoot for about a half of a hand written page per answer.Your notes will be turned in and count towards your discussion grade.
  1. The Count thinks of himself as Providence, or God's hand on Earth. He sets out to reward and punish. Is this possible, reasonable, believable?
  2. What's the deal with The Count and women? He freely admits that Haydée is his slave, and he claims to have seraglios (harems) all over the world. Does this affect our perception of him?
  3. You are a big Hollywood filmmaker, and your mission is to create a new film version of The Count of Monte Cristo. However, the film has to be no longer than two hours long. What would you cut out of the story and what would you keep in order to tell your version of The Count?
  4. Do you ever disagree with what the Count does?
  5. Should the Count and Mercédès end up together at the end of the novel or not?
  6. The central issue in The Count of Monte Cristo is the question of revenge. In the case of this book, is Dantes' quest for vengeance morally just? Can vengeance ever stand in for justice?

Count Discussion #1

Same rules as the TKAMB discussions: comment around three or more times, interact with other comments, first names only. This is due Next Wed night by 8.

Discuss anyone or all of the following:
  • There is a description of Edmond Dantes on page 85 and how 14 years of captivity has changed him physically. Do you think he is more changed physically or mentally? Which would it be for you?
  • Luck, good and bad, seems to play a big role in the book. Do you think it was just luck that the pirates are going to the Isle of Monte Cristo to exchange stolen goods? Does it detract from the story?
  • p. 89.  Jacopo offers to stay with the injured Dantes which means that he will not earn his share from the sale of goods from the smuggler ship Jeaune -Amelie. Dantes says to Jacopo, “God will reward you for your good will.” What do you believe about good deeds being rewarded (sometimes called karma, sometimes expressed, ’What goes around, comes around’)
