HW for The Landlady

The Landlady is a story based on a folktale archetype. An archetype is an original model of a story, or tale, on which other stories are based or patterned. The best known folktale of this particular archetype is Hansel and Gretel. The story is about a young brother and sister who discover a house of sweets in the forest and a cannibalistic witch, who at first seems helpful. This basic archetype has been copied many times and in many different cultures. This means the basic idea, or theme, of this story must be relevant to many different types of people. But why?

To start you thinking about this idea I want you to chose another folktale to read tonight and comment on it in your journal. Here is a link to some major ones.

Read a tale. They are short so it shouldn't take more than five minutes or so. Then in your journal jot down some of the similarities to The Landlady and some differences. Shoot for about a half a page of notes. You will be sharing these in your small discussion groups tomorrow.
